Speaker- Hans Haas of HAAS Sales.

Guest Speaker- Johnny Grindstaff Field Supervisor of the Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau informed us about started the presentation explaining the N.C. (National) Elevator Code A17.1 and any directives (control/alarm location) issued since it’s adoption. He explained the “Life Safety” requirement to provide means of evacuating elevator sumps of effluents at the required 3000GPH
per elevator car per hoist way. He stated that these figures are multiplied by the number of cars in the same shaft sharing a common hoist way sump. His explanations helped many understand the need for these pumps and controls in the elevator pit. We thank Johnny for his time he gave us and appreciate his contributions.

Hans Haas, manufacturer’s representative for Stancor Oil-Minder Pumps & Control Systems, followed Johnny by introducing the different methods engineers and architects design around to meet the presented code. We discussed tanks, oil-water separators and oil detecting pumps and controls and the varying degree of labor to install and maintain. The Stancor Oil-minder Pump & Control System, a fully assembled, fully U.L. Listed package was viewed and explained. The ability to meet the code’s GPM requirements, protect the environment by detecting oil and alarming and provide a contractor friendly installation keeps this product consistently specified by the engineering community. Stancor Pumps and Haas Sales wants to thank everyone who attended and for the opportunity to present to the CPHCCA.

Meeting was called to order by Hal Hester.

Hal Hester offered our prayer and dinner was
served.

The North Carolina Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinklers
Contractors (BOE) spoke to over 30 local contractors and industry representatives at the
regular meeting of the Charlotte Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Contractors Association (CPHCCA) on October 11, 2011.  The dinner meeting was held in conjunction with Central Piedmont Community College and held at the CPCC’s Harper Campus.  Attendance and dinner were free
and provided by the CPHCCA.

Dale Dawson, executive director of the N.C. Board of Examiners was the keynote
speaker and presented a comprehensive, informative program on a variety of
subjects.  John Todaro, senior administrative officer, accompanied him and assisted in answering questions.  Subjects covered included a briefing of the relatively new state residential Fire Sprinkler code issues, a list of upcoming educational opportunities that can assist you in beginning the process of adding this separate licensing to the list of services offered by your firm.

Dale then discussed the board’s requirement of when the permitting of water heaters
is required and addressed common misconceptions involving this relatively new process that is governed by State statues. Commercial water heaters always require the pulling of a permit and
complete inspection by the local governing authority or you are in violation State statutes.
Residential water heaters may not be required to have permits pulled and inspections made,
but only if certain conditions exist. One of these conditions is that the licensee is required to
personally examine all water heater installations at completion when a permit is not required.
Failure to follow all conditions upon verified complaint can lead to sanctions by the (BOE).  Dale suggested looking at the articles in the March & September 2011 issues of the Board’s bulletin or surf the web at www.nclicensing.org to get all the details.

He showed the group a video Marble Mountian Burn Video about fire sprinklers in residental homes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_rdFegaqiI

Dale then ended the program with a brief discussion of the (BOE) consideration of
beginning a new “Technician” classification for licensee employees.  This program could replace“Journeyman” cards that several local governmental bodies now offer to promote professionalism and education in our trades.  You can get further information on any of these topics and more by contacting NC Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinklers Contractors at 919-875-3612.
